Auburn and Ontario County are among the communities set to benefit from a new round of state funding aimed at expanding and improving affordable housing across New York.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday that $44.7 million has been awarded through multiple New York State Homes and Community Renewal programs to create and rehabilitate more than 420 rental homes statewide.
In Auburn, a local project will receive $3.3 million through the Small Buildings Participation Loan Program. The funding will support renovations at 40-42 South Street, a 22-unit residential building. Officials say the program helps finance upgrades to buildings with between five and 50 units, with all apartments designated for households earning up to 80 percent of the area’s median income.
Ontario County is also included in the funding announcement, receiving $300,000 through the Vacant Rental Program. The funding will be used to rehabilitate four rental units, transforming vacant or distressed properties into livable, affordable housing for low- to moderate-income residents.
State officials say the Vacant Rental Program focuses on converting underutilized housing into viable units, offering financial incentives to property owners to complete renovations and bring apartments back online.
The funding is part of the stateβs broader effort to address housing affordability and increase the supply of safe, accessible housing options for residents across New York.
