New York State Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan announced Friday that he will not seek re-election this November, citing recent health challenges.

Gallahan, a Republican who represents the 131st Assembly District, said he will complete the remainder of his current term, which ends December 31, 2026, and that his offices will remain open and fully operational.

β€œI remain committed to working hard every day for the people I represent,” Gallahan said. β€œThere is still important work to be done. We have a state budget to finalize and eight weeks remaining of the legislative session, and I will keep advocating for our communities and delivering results until my final day in office.”

During his time in the Assembly, Gallahan said he has helped secure significant state funding for local communities across the district over the past six years.

β€œI am proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish together and deeply grateful for the trust placed in me by my constituents,” he said. β€œThese investments have made a real difference in our communities, and I remain committed to continuing this work throughout my remaining eight and a half months in office.”

Gallahan also pointed to his work on issues including public safety, infrastructure funding, economic development, support for local agriculture, and advocacy for veterans.

β€œAfter a tremendous amount of prayer and reflection with my wife, Lynn, and our children, Jackie and Corey, I have made the difficult decision not to seek re-election due to recent health challenges, and while this was not an easy choice, it is the right one so I can focus on my health while continuing to fulfill my responsibilities to the community,” Gallahan said.

Looking ahead, Gallahan announced his support for Mark Benjamin to succeed him in the Assembly.

β€œI strongly support Mark Benjamin as our next Assemblyman and believe he has the experience, work ethic, and deep understanding of our communities to serve effectively,” Gallahan said. β€œAs a longtime Seneca County resident, Mark is well-equipped to represent the people of this district. While the Committee to Fill Vacancies will formally select the nominee, I am proud to offer my full endorsement and look forward to supporting him throughout this process and his campaign.”

The 131st Assembly District includes portions of Ontario, Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Broome, and Chenango counties.
