New security features are in place at the Cayuga County Office Building.
A new metal detector and bag scanner were installed last week at the building’s main entrance. Speaking on FLX Morning, Sheriff Brian Schenck said they are already paying off.
“We’ve already had a couple of really good finds, some very large knives that were inside a bag,” Schenck said. “In one of the instances, somebody that was utilizing social services in the building didn’t disclose that they had those knives but we did find them in the bag. So, within the week, we’ve had what I think is a really big success with that.”
The sheriff added that these new security features will not only keep staff safe but also anyone in the building.
“Now, we can certainly say we’re doing a much better job of securing our office building for not only making our staff there but anyone who visits the office building as well,” Schecnk continued.
Schenck also thanked the Cayuga County Legislature, especially Legislator Jim Basile, approving the funding for the upgrades.
