Heat Wave Breaks Tonight as a Cooler Holiday Weekend Arrives

The heat that’s dominated this week is finally winding down, and I can see it in real time: the Extreme Heat Warning from NWS Binghamton expires at 8:00 PM tonight, and cooler, drier air is already pressing in from the northwest. Geneva sits at 85° with light drizzle, while Watkins Glen, Corning, and Elmira are still holding at 91° with rain showers mixing in ahead of the cooldown. That spread tells the story of a region mid-transition.

Overnight lows will settle into the low-to-mid 70s — no frost risk, no severe threat — as the upper-level ridge that baked the region all week retreats toward the Atlantic seaboard. Saturday, Independence Day, looks noticeably more comfortable: highs near 84° in Geneva with a 37% chance of rain showers. Fireworks plans could see some interference, but this isn’t a washout — scattered showers are likely to be hit-or-miss rather than continuous. NWS notes a few storms through the weekend could be strong to severe, so keep checking conditions Saturday evening if you’re headed out for Fourth of July celebrations. Sunday cools further, with highs around 80° and lower humidity.
