A storm window is opening up faster than the calm morning skies suggest — at 6 AM, Geneva is sitting at a pleasant 67° under mainly clear skies, but a cold front driven by a low over northern Ontario is bearing down on the region and will change the picture considerably before sunset.
The morning looks fine. Skies stay mostly clear through midmorning, with temperatures climbing comfortably through the 70s. Take advantage of the early window if you have outdoor plans — Geneva and Auburn top out near 81° to 82°, while Ithaca and Watkins Glen could push to 86° this afternoon ahead of the front.
The timing to watch: NWS Buffalo is flagging two rounds of activity. An initial round of showers and storms is possible between roughly 7 AM and 9 AM, then the main line — organized ahead of and along the cold front — is expected to push through between 2 PM and 5 PM. With high wind shear in the atmosphere, some storms could produce damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall. The SPC has this area in a Marginal to Slight Risk for severe weather. No tornado threat is highlighted, but gusty winds are the primary concern.
Rainfall of an inch or more is possible with the heavier cells. Stream flows are currently unremarkable, so flooding risk is limited, but localized ponding on roadways is possible.
Evening clears rapidly behind the front, with temperatures dropping into the mid-60s by 9 PM and reaching 60° overnight — a noticeably different feel by Monday morning.
Looking ahead: Monday brings sunshine and a welcome cooldown, with Geneva topping near 66°. Mid-week stays mainly dry and pleasant in the mid-70s, though light drizzle returns by Wednesday evening and lingers into the following weekend.
