Weekend Forecast: Beautiful Saturday, then storms arrive Sunday

Saturday morning is delivering one of the nicer starts we’ve seen in a while — clear skies, a comfortable westerly breeze, and temperatures already climbing through the upper 70s heading into midday. The Finger Lakes region is in fine shape today, with Geneva sitting at 77° and Ithaca and Watkins Glen both touching 80° under full sunshine.

This afternoon will be the highlight of the weekend. Highs reach the low-to-mid 80s for most of the region, with Geneva and Auburn topping near 84°, Watkins Glen pushing to 88°, and Corning and Elmira near 86°. Humidity is comfortable — dew points in the upper 40s to low 50s — so this afternoon should feel genuinely pleasant rather than sticky. Sunset comes late at 8:47 PM, giving evening plans a long window of dry weather.

Sunday is a different story. The NWS Buffalo office flagged an increased severe weather risk for Sunday in their overnight discussion. A cold front pushing through the eastern Great Lakes will bring widespread showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening. Forecasters are watching for damaging winds and hail as the main threats, with enough atmospheric moisture and instability in place for strong to severe storms. The inland portions of the region carry the greatest risk. Have a way to receive warnings handy heading into Sunday afternoon.

Behind the front, Monday clears out with highs near 74°, though lingering drizzle is possible through Tuesday and Wednesday, keeping temperatures in the 68°–78° range the first half of the work week. No major heat or cold is on the horizon beyond that.
