A Siena College poll found that 78% of New Yorkers support allowing grocery stores to sell wine, despite a longstanding Prohibition-era ban. Support increased across all demographics, with only 15% opposed. After learning about incentives for selling New York wines, overall support rose above 80%.
State Sen. Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Pamela Hunter reintroduced a bill in January to create a supermarket wine license. Eligible stores must be at least 5,000 square feet and generate 65% of revenue from food. The license requires a $10,000 one-time fee and an annual fee of 0.5% of wine sales, excluding New York-made wines, which would reduce costs for stores promoting local products.
