A corrections officer was injured this week at Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
According to NYSCOPBA, the union representing corrections officers, the incident happened Monday around 10:30a. Inmates were heading back to their cells following morning recreation when one inmate was observed yelling in the stairway between cellblocks.
When a guard approached the inmate to order him back to his cell, the inmate allegedly punched the officer and threw him down the stairs.
A second officer arrived and attempted to place the inmate in a body hold; however, the inmate was able to break free and lunged toward the injured officer.
Additional staff arrived and were able to subdue the inmate
The injured officer was taken to Westchester Medical Center for knee, ankle, and facial injuries. An X-ray revealed the officer had broken a bone in their foot.
Two other officers sustained injuries but remained on duty after being treated by staff at the prison.
The inmate is serving two to four years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon.
