Tragedy struck at Washington Park in Albany over the weekend, as a 12-year-old boy died and an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured after falling through the ice.
According to the Albany Police Department, the boy was attempting to walk across the frozen lake toward the park’s lake house when he fell through. The girl, trying to help him, followed the same path and also fell into the icy water.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 4:35 p.m. Saturday. The girl was rescued and rushed to Albany Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition. The boy’s body was recovered from the lake at approximately 7:25 p.m.
Both children were students at North Albany Middle School in the City School District of Albany. Their names have not been released.
