The Yates County woman arrested Thursday on charges of criminally negligent homicide stemming from the March death of her five-month-old baby is facing new criminal charges.
In an unrelated joint investigation to the homicide that was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the Public Assistance Fraud Unit, Samantha Crane of Dundee is accused of providing false information to the Department of Social Services which resulted in her receiving benefits she was not entitled to. Crane was charged with welfare fraud, grand larceny, and offering a false instrument for filing.
The 36-year-old is jailed on the criminally negligent homicide charge for the death of her baby, who was found unresponsive, in a Dundee residence back in March. The child was taken to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital and died a short time after arrival. No other details about the death of the infant have been released.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
