A Cayuga County woman is facing felony charges for alleged welfare fraud.
According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest is the result of a joint investigation by the sheriff’s office, Department of Social Services, and the District Attorney’s Office that alleges 47-year-old Sasha Binns failed to report income, resulting in overissuance of public benefits.
She was arrested and charged with Grand Larceny, Welfare Fraud, and Misuse of Food Stamps, all felonies.
Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck noted that welfare fraud is a crime and his office will continue to partner with DSS and the DA’s office to investigate, arrest, and prosecute offenders in Cayuga County.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
