Auburn Police report that on Saturday at approximately 3:49 p.m., a marked patrol vehicle was involved in a crash at North Street and Seymour Street.
Authorities say 38-year-old Michael Nielins, of Auburn, was driving north on North Street when he attempted a left turn onto Seymour Street and collided with the oncoming police car. Both vehicles deployed airbags, and the officer was treated at Auburn Community Hospital.
Nielins reportedly showed signs of impairment, and alcohol was found in his vehicle. After failing field sobriety tests and refusing further alcohol testing, Nielins was taken into custody.
Nielins, who has a prior DWI conviction, faces charges of felony DWI, open container, unlicensed operation, and failure to yield the right-of-way.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
