The village of Waterloo is hosting its annual Celebrate Commemorate weekend this Saturday and Sunday, May 23-24, featuring a memorial 5K race and a free classic car show — and organizers say both events will go on rain or shine.

The Tribute to the Fallen 5K kicks off Saturday morning with registration opening at 7 a.m. and the race starting at 8:30 a.m. Organizer Don described the course as “fast, fun, and fairly flat” — certified by USA Track & Field for competitive runners, but welcoming to families with strollers, kids as young as five or six, and first-time participants. “It’s not like you’re running Heartbreak Hill at the Boston Marathon,” he said.

The race draws around 100 participants on a typical weekend. Top finishers earn $100 prizes for first male and first female runners, and age group winners receive special champion shirts. Registration is open at RunSignUp.com. The course record stands at 15 minutes for the 5K distance, set approximately five years ago.

On Sunday, the Celebrate Commemorate Car Show takes over Main Street in Waterloo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with setup beginning at 7 a.m. The event is free — no registration required. Car owners simply show up with their vehicles. Organizer Mike said the show typically draws 300 to 350 cars on a good weather weekend, lining both sides of Main Street heading east and west for roughly a mile.

“There’s something for everybody,” Mike said. “It’s American-made, it’s foreign, it’s 100-year-old antiques right up to modern muscle.” A Model T spotted driving around nearby Geneva earlier this week may even make an appearance.

The car show wraps up by 3 p.m. to make way for a parade at 6 p.m. Sunday evening. Organizers noted that while lightning could affect outdoor activities like the parade, the 5K and car show are committed to proceeding regardless of rain.

Paul Szmal: This weekend is Celebrate Commemorate in the village of Waterloo Rain or shine. I want to emphasize that because there are activities that are taking place Some may be weather dependent others not so much now One of the events that is not weather dependent because it'll happen rain or shine is the 5k and Don is here to talk about That morning Don.

Guest: Hey, good morning folks So we celebrate the freedoms we have and we commemorate the fallen and that's our 5k the tribute to the fallen we call it our fast fun fairly flat family friendly course and it's a US track Association is certified for you if you need that and We always have fun at that race and it's the time to kick off the summer with a great 5k. That's meaningful to us And meaningful to the veterans and being family-friendly That's kind of an important thing for the casual person that doesn't normally compete it There's still the challenge for the runner that wants to get their times and keeps track of that sort of thing But for somebody that's new to it, it's not like you're running heartbreak Hill at the Boston Marathon. No, it's great We have families that walk pushing strollers moms dads bringing the little kids even five six eight year olds We have age groups and one unique thing about our race in this area is that we give out Winner shirts age group champion age group second place age group third place We also have $100 for the first female $100 for the first male or runners

Paul Szmal: How many people usually participate

Guest: we on a good week will get about a hundred So we have shirts for that people that show up the race shirts and then of course the age group winner shirts now Registration still open or registration is on run sign up and then we start registration 7 o'clock Saturday morning race kicks off at 830

Paul Szmal: Okay, and the race usually takes what about an hour?

Guest: The walkers are an hour Our record right now is 15 minutes for the the person that wanted it was about five years ago I don't think I could even walk a mile in 15 minutes much less run 5k. So more power to a man

Paul Szmal: Great a Mike is here as well now Mike you're involved with the car show. This is gonna happen on Sunday

Guest: absolutely, Sunday from 9 to 3 registration starts at 7 and Unlike, you know a certified 5k deal the car show here. This is just all about showing up and showing out. That's right This is a free event. You just show up with your ride and enjoy the whole day

Paul Szmal: And you said on a good weather weekend You usually can average what about 300

Guest: 300 300 to 350 cars we line up on Main Street We go in both directions East and West we can take up about a mile with two lanes filled on each side of the street

Paul Szmal: That's a lot of vehicles. I imagine it kind of runs a gamut to

Guest: oh, there's something for everybody there It's it's American-made. It's foreign. It's 100 year old antiques right up to modern muscle Somebody was just pointing out on Facebook to yesterday I think there was like an old Model T or something cruising around, Geneva that may very well Show up on hopefully they will be there.

Paul Szmal: Yeah Yeah, you get a little bit of everything when you have a hometown car show like this That's the that's the cool thing about it everything from the classic to the modern So that but I should stress now if the weather's bad on Sunday We're looking to still be there right lightning can be a fatal event for us right

Guest: right the show is on

Paul Szmal: Okay, so so rain or shine absolutely beautiful beautiful so bring your rain gear if you're gonna run on Saturday, that's for sure or if you're gonna walk and Well, you know have it handy on Sunday because Sunday looks a little bit better than Saturday right keeping our fingers crossed.

Guest: Yeah Sunday Yeah, but the important thing to remember is that the entire weekend You know there like I said there are some activities You don't like the parade if there's lightning or something like that the parade doesn't happen on Saturday But for the most part the events the activities and everything they're happening anyway So if it's gonna be a you know the soaker that they're forecasting on Saturday who cares bring an umbrella bring your raincoat Come have some fun. Where are your boots?

Paul Szmal: So again registration is that run sign up calm run sign up calm and then Seven o'clock on Saturday morning, we'll be there for that okay, and then there's no registration required for the car show You just show up with your vehicle. What time do you start?

Guest: We'll be there at 7 a.m.. So they can show up early

Paul Szmal: Okay, and well how long does that usually run on Sunday?

Guest: Well, you know we stay there till 3 o'clock in the afternoon. There's a parade at 6 So we're asking for everybody to either clear out or understand that there's gonna be a parade happening with your car there

Paul Szmal: There you go there you go Well, you know when you want to leave your car there and everybody walks by in the parade And you get to show it off some more right

Guest: absolutely
