Seneca Falls Acupuncture has been quietly building a reputation in the Finger Lakes for seven years, earning more than 100 five-star Google reviews and three FLX Finest Awards for Best Acupuncture Clinic — and owner Michelle Grasek says many people still don’t know everything the practice can offer.

Grasek joined the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce’s Business Spotlight to talk about the clinic’s three core areas: women’s health, pain management, and cosmetic acupuncture. That last category often surprises people. “The idea is that you put these teeny tiny points in on the face and that helps build collagen in the skin to reduce the look of wrinkles and prevent wrinkles,” she explained. While cosmetic acupuncture is still the lesser-known service, Grasek said interest is growing as more people search for natural alternatives to cosmetic procedures.

Pain management remains the most common reason people walk through the door. Seneca Falls Acupuncture treats arthritis, back pain, neck and hip pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, and connective tissue disorders, among other conditions. Grasek noted that patients don’t need a formal Western diagnosis to get started — acupuncture can begin while someone is still undergoing testing with their doctor, and it works alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage.

Because acupuncture is cumulative, Grasek typically recommends one treatment per week for six to eight weeks at the outset. From there, many patients space out their visits, with some — like those managing arthritis — coming in just once a month for maintenance. The practice also treats digestive issues, a benefit Grasek said surprises many first-time patients.

Seneca Falls Acupuncture is located at 12 North Park Street in Seneca Falls, inside the Academy Square building. Hours vary by day but generally run between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Appointments can be booked online at SenecaFallsAcupuncture.com or by calling 607-216-8112.

Paul Szmal: Welcome to the Chamber Business Spotlight brought to you by Discover Seneca and the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce. And this month we get to talk to the folks from Seneca Falls Acupuncture, Michelle Grasick is with us. Hi, Michelle. How are you today?

Guest: I'm doing well. How are you?

Paul Szmal: I am good. Tell me a little bit about what you do at Seneca Falls Acupuncture.

Guest: So we specialize in women's health, pain management, and cosmetic acupuncture.

Paul Szmal: I'm familiar with acupuncture for pain relief, but not cosmetically. How does that work?

Guest: So the idea is that you put these teeny tiny points in on the face and that helps build collagen in the skin to reduce the look of wrinkles and prevent wrinkles.

Paul Szmal: I didn't even know that was a thing. That's very cool. Yeah. Do you get a lot of people for that? Do you get more people coming in for the pain management aspect?

Guest: I would say we get more people for pain management, but cosmetic acupuncture is becoming more familiar to people, especially if they start Googling natural wrinkle reduction, that sort of thing. There are more and more articles in magazines and online about cosmetic acupuncture than ever.

Paul Szmal: Now I know my wife has used acupuncture because she has migraines and it does help, but what are some of the other parts of pain management where acupuncture can be of help?

Guest: So we see a wide range of pain management conditions. So lots of arthritis, back pain, neck pain, hip pain, knee pain, all the major joints basically, and headaches, as you mentioned, migraines, fibromyalgia, connective tissue disorders. Acupuncture is really good for pretty much any kind of pain, and we often tell people that even if they don't yet have a specific pain diagnosis, like if they're trying to figure it out with their doctor and they're getting lots of tests, acupuncture does not require you to have a Western diagnosis to get started with pain management. It's very gentle. It's very safe. It works well with lots of different modalities, so PT, chiropractic, massage, and then having all of your imaging done at your doctor, you can do all of that while you're getting acupuncture.

Paul Szmal: Is this something that people come back for on a semi-regular basis, regular basis?

Guest: Yeah, so acupuncture is cumulative, which just means that you do need multiple treatments in order to see the best results and for those results to be lasting. So typically the recommendation is one treatment a week for six to eight weeks in the beginning to try to get the person as much progress as we can. And then we usually try to space the treatments out, and if they need maintenance, for example, arthritis patients will often come in just once a month for their maintenance treatments after they've done their six to eight treatments closer together.

Paul Szmal: And here's something I didn't know about acupuncture as well, is that it actually works for digestive issues?

Guest: Yes. It works very well for all sorts of digestive issues.

Paul Szmal: So if people want to go to make an appointment with you and get the process started, how do they go about doing that?

Guest: So they can visit our website and book online at SenecaFallsAcupuncture.com, or they can give us a call, 607-216-8112. If they have questions, they can certainly give us a call or send an email. We're always happy to chat with people about whether acupuncture is a good fit for their needs.

Paul Szmal: And I want to mention, too, that they have over 100 five-star Google reviews, and they are a three-time FLX Finest Award winner for Best Acupuncture Clinic. You've been in business for seven years now, Michelle. When did you join the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce?

Guest: Oh, gosh, I think five years ago, at least.

Paul Szmal: Tell me about the experience so far.

Guest: Oh, it's been wonderful. Everyone is so supportive, and I find that if I need help with something, I will go to Casey or Jeff at the chamber and basically say, you know, who can you connect me with? Or do you have any resources where you can help me get more visible in the community? Or someone who I can ask, you know, finance questions of? So having them as a resource has been pretty incredible.

Paul Szmal: And has it translated into results for you as a business?

Guest: Oh, yes, of course. Yeah, even just the monthly chamber meetings will usually result in a couple of patients.

Paul Szmal: That's fantastic. So you would recommend being a member of the Seneca County Chamber?

Guest: Of course, yeah.

Paul Szmal: SenecaFallsAcupuncture.com is the web address. Physical location is 12 North Park Street in Seneca Falls. You can find that in the Academy Square building. So what hours do you normally open, Michelle?

Paul Szmal: And once again, the web address is SenecaFallsAcupuncture.com if you want to get a consultation or make an appointment. Michelle, thank you very much for joining us and filling us in this morning. Appreciate it.
