Cayuga Community College Baseball dropped two road games to #10 Hudson Valley Community College on Thursday.
The Spartans’ 11-game win streak ended in a 14-4 opening loss to the nationally-ranked Vikings, and Cayuga also lost the second half of the doubleheader, 12-7. Cayuga’s record is now 13-5 on the season and 4-2 in East Division play.
After holding a brief lead in the first inning of the opener, the Spartans fell behind 5-1 before cutting the margin to a single run in the third inning. Two runs scored on Jeremy Recio’s bases-loaded single, and Jacob Laird scored later in the inning on a single by Alejandro Diaz. The Vikings responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, to rebuild their lead.
Mike DeRosa led Cayuga at the plate with two hits in the first game, including a double and two runs scored. Recio had two RBI, Jean-Paul Anthony had a double, and Kevin Dolan scored once.
In the second game, Cayuga fell behind early before scoring three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Recio drew a bases-loaded walk and Diaz doubled in a run in the fifth inning, and DeRosa and Recio had run-scoring singles in the sixth.
Recio had two hits, two walks and two RBI in the second game, and Dolan and Laird each scored twice.
The Spartans host the Vikings on Saturday, March 29, with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for noon. Cayuga hosts SUNY Adirondack the following day at 1 p.m.
