Police have taken into custody a man now labeled a suspect in the death of an Ithaca man.
On May 4th, a Tompkins County Grand Jury indicted Larry Walrad for the charge of felony Second Degree Murder. This indictment was a sealed document by the court so we could not legally release this information until Walrad was arraigned on the charge. Since the indictment, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office made several attempts to locate Walrad without success. It was believed that Walrad became aware of the indictment and left his residence and was in hiding.
Last Thursday, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office made the decision to ask for the public’s assistance with locating Walrad with the limited information we could release to the public.
Later that night at around 10 p.m., the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Walrad was observed on Main St. in Candor. Contact was immediately made to the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police, and an extensive search was conducted. Walrad was not located, but a bike believed to belong to Walrad was located so the search continued in that area into Friday.
On Friday, at about 1:15 pm Walrad was taken into custody in Candor and transported to Tompkins County. Walrad was arraigned in Tompkins County Court and sent to the Tompkins County Jail without bail.
The Tompkins County Sheriffs would like to thank the public for their assistance and understanding regarding the limitation on the information we could release.
During this investigation the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the NYS Police Major Crimes and Forensics Unit, the Ithaca Police Department, the County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office.
