Trial for Steuben County Man Accused of Murdering Sister is Delayed

A judge in Steuben County agreed to postpone future court proceedings for John Marvin the Second.

Marvin is the 59-year-old county resident charged with the murder of his sister in Erwin this past February. During Marvin’s court appearance this past Wednesday, the judge agreed to postpone the proceedings until October. Marvin’s public defender requested the delay to allow for additional psychological testing, which aims to uncover any undiagnosed psychological or emotional issues Marvin might be experiencing, though it is not intended to assess his legal competence.

Back in February, police responded to a home in Erwin and found 60-year-old Heather Moran suffering from injuries received during an altercation with her younger brother John. State Police say Marvin is accused of striking his sister in the head repeatedly with a cast iron skillet while she sat in the kitchen and ate with their 81-year-old father, whom they both took care of. Their father attempted to stop his son from the assault but fell to the ground after standing up from his wheelchair. He was unharmed but was taken to the hospital for a checkover.
