State Lawmakers Join Opposition to Watkins Glen Gravel Mine Expansion

SHARE NOW

Two local state lawmakers have joined the Watkins Glen Village Board and the Schuyler County Legislature in opposition to the proposed 47-acre expansion of the Padua Sand and Gravel Pit.

It’s Greener Now, Incorporated proposes expanding the Padua Ridge location off State Route 409 by more than 60 acres to approximately 75.38 acres. The proposed expansion of the State Route 409 location would result in the extraction of approximately 3.5 million cubic yards of material for approximately 20 years.

In a letter sent Thursday to the DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos, State Senator Tom O’Mara and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano noted the potential environmental impact, community concern and impact on homeowners in the immediate area. If the state agency does approve the expansion request, Senator O’Mara and Assemblyman Palmesano ask that the DEC perform a supplemental environmental impact statement before they fully process the request.
