Fire Heavily Damages Steuben County Home

SHARE NOW

An aggressive attack by firefighters helped prevent a fire from spreading throughout a home in Steuben County on Tuesday.

The fire at 8760 State Route 53 in Wheeler was called in by a passerby who spotted smoke shortly after 10 a.m. No one was home when firefighters first arrived on the scene. They found heavy fire in the kitchen, which extended into the second floor.

Unfortunately one of the family’s dogs perished in the fire and a second was rescued and revived using a donated Pet Rescue Mask designed to administer oxygen. The second dog was taken to a vet and there has been no update on its condition.

Wednesday’s fire appears to have started in the kitchen area but the exact cause remains under investigation.

The Bath VA fire, Prattsburgh, Avoca, Kanona, Hammondsport, Savona, and Pulteney Fire Departments, as well as the Bath Volunteer Ambulance Corps, all assisted the Bath Fire Department at the scene.
