Bath Man Gets 50+ Years in Prison for Police Standoff

SHARE NOW

A Steuben County man was sentenced to at least 55 years in state prison for a six-hour standoff two summers ago during which he fired at law enforcement.

Larry Schoonover received 35 years to life for 12 counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer and 20 years for First-Degree Criminal Use of a Firearm, to be served consecutively.

The standoff began on August 20, 2023, when police responded to a domestic disturbance at Schoonover’s home on Roosevelt Avenue in the town of Bath. Schoonover fired a gun inside the home and barricaded himself, but a woman inside escaped safely. During the standoff, the 53-year-old Schoonover repeatedly fired at officers, who returned fire. The situation ended when Schoonover exited with a shotgun, ignored police commands, and was shot in the leg after firing at New York State troopers.

A jury found Schoonover guilty after deliberating for more than five hours in November.
