Drivers heading to the Syracuse Nationals next week can expect a heightened law enforcement presence as agencies from across Central New York prepare for one of the region’s largest annual events.
The New York State Police, Syracuse Police Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, DeWitt Police Department, and Cicero Police Department announced they will conduct coordinated traffic enforcement throughout the Syracuse Nationals, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the New York State Fairgrounds.
Officers will patrol the fairgrounds, major travel corridors, local roads, and surrounding communities to help manage traffic and promote public safety.
Law enforcement officials said all New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws will be actively enforced during the event.
Enforcement efforts will focus on speeding, aggressive and reckless driving, exhibition driving, unsafe lane changes, following too closely, distracted driving, seat belt violations, impaired driving, illegal vehicle equipment and modifications, as well as parking and pedestrian safety.
Authorities warned that reckless driving and other dangerous traffic offenses could result in vehicles being towed. Vehicles involved in criminal or traffic investigations may be held as evidence, while those found to be unsafe or otherwise illegal to operate on public roads may also be removed from service.
Officials are encouraging motorists to allow extra travel time, obey traffic control devices, and be patient as increased traffic is expected throughout the Syracuse area.
Drivers bringing classic, collector, modified, or specialty vehicles to the event are reminded that participation in the Syracuse Nationals does not exempt them from complying with state traffic laws.
Anyone attending the event or living in the area is encouraged to report emergencies or suspicious activity by calling 911.
Law enforcement agencies say the coordinated effort is intended to ensure a safe and enjoyable Syracuse Nationals weekend for attendees, residents, and motorists alike.
