Waterloo resident Ellen Hughes will be celebrated on March 15th as the Seneca County Women’s Coalition “2024 Woman of the Year.”
A dinner in her honor will be held at the Lux Hotel in Seneca Falls. A resident of Waterloo and a retired Spanish teacher, Ellen is representative of “service above self.” Wearing many hats, Ellen has served as President and Vice President of the Seneca County Literacy Committee. As a member of Rotary at the Waterloo High School she started the Waterloo Rotary Youth Interact Club that grew to become active within the community performing many community projects such as “Pennies for Polio Plus” “Food Drives for the Holidays” and more.
As a Rotarian, Ellen served as its local President, District 7120 Governor, District Global Grants Chair, District Policy and Procedures Chair, and District Foundation Chair. She also serves as Celebrate Commemorate Food Booth chair, co-chairs Rotary’s Fall Frolic event at Muranda Cheese and co-chairs their annual “Service Above Self” award dinner.
Ellen has been recognized as a multi-Paul Harris recipient and remains active as a Rotarian. She is a communicant of St. Francis St. Clare Parish and a member of the Catholic Daughters and she can be found most Tuesday mornings serving breakfast at St. Mary’s.
She is the recipient of the Catholic Charities of the Fingers Lakes “Sharing the Light” award and she currently sits on their Board as an active advisor. Ellen has served on the Waterloo School Board as a member, and then as Board Chair. She is wholly invested in the Trevor’s Backpack Program as its Program Administrator. Ellen is Vice Chair of the Seneca County Children’s Committee and Vice Chair of the Seneca County Christmas Project providing coats, toys, and food for children. As a member of Phi Beta Psi sorority, she assists in their fundraising and awareness-raising for cancer research. Ellen is also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
The celebratory dinner will be held in the Chancellor Ballroom at the LuxHotel (formerly the Quality Inn). If family, friends, and colleagues would like to join in honoring Ellen, you may place your reservation with Adriene Emmo at (315) 521-3461 by March 10 or send an email request to [email protected]. If you would like to place a congratulatory ad in the dinner program, please call Adrienne for specifications.
Funds raised from the event are donated to the recipient’s charity of choice. In its 50 plus-year history, the Coalition’s events have raised thousands in support of various local nonprofits, such as Pathway Home, the Seneca Falls Backpack Program, and last year’s recipient, the Seneca Falls Performing Arts Center.
