The Ontario County Landfill will close.
On Thursday, the county’s Board of Supervisors approved a motion to shut down the landfill in 2028 when its Operations, Management, and Lease Agreement with Casella Waste Services, the landfill’s operator, and the landfill state’s permit expires. 2028 is also when the 389-acre landfill in Seneca is expected to reach its capacity to accept solid waste.
“This decision to close the landfill reflects the Board of Supervisors’ commitment to Ontario County’s long-term environmental and community well-being,” said Ontario County Board Chairman Todd Campbell. “While it marks the end of an era, it also opens the door to innovative and sustainable waste management solutions that reduce our reliance on landfilling going forward.”
20 of the 21 supervisors voted to close the landfill.
