Seneca County Sheriff’s Office Remembers Fallen Colleagues

SHARE NOW

With this week being National Police Week, the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office held a National Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony in front of the Law Enforcement Center in Romulus.

The ceremony included a reading of the names of all law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in the United States in 2023.

The ceremony also featured the Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and a wreath laying at the John Walters Memorial. Mr. John Walters is the only member of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office to die in the line of duty. While working as the “acting turnkey” at the Seneca County Jail, Mr. Walters was murdered by two men attempting to escape on January 9, 1887.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office, Five Points Correctional Facility, Seneca Falls Police Department, New York State Police, and Waterloo Police Department were in attendance at the ceremony.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed that May 15th would be National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day to remember the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

Sheriff Thompson stated, “We will always remember our fallen brothers and sisters and this is a small way to pay tribute to them. As the leader of this organization, I take this responsibility very seriously and I sincerely appreciate our members who participated in the ceremony. I would also like to thank those who attended. We will always be indebted to our fallen law enforcement officers. I also wish nothing but safety for our brave law enforcement officers as they carry out their duties each and every day while serving their communities.”
