Seneca County Sheriff Warns of NYSEG Door-to-Door Scam

SHARE NOW

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a troubling new scam: individuals posing as NYSEG representatives are going door-to-door, trying to gain access to homes by falsely promising energy bill savings.  NYSEG representatives have stated that they do not have anyone in the area working on energy evaluations at this time.

The public is reminded to:

    1. Always confirm the individual’s employment before engaging in conversation where personal information is requested. NYSEG representatives state that employees must have their company ID present or produceable upon request.
    2. Never give out personal identifying information to solicitors. This includes how many people live in your home, when you are typically at work, if your home is on automated timers, or what security services you have for your home.
    3. Never allow solicitors into your home without confirming their affiliation with the company they claim to work for.

Sheriff Tim Thompson says if you encounter a similar situation, call 911 immediately — a police officer will be dispatched to your location without delay.
