The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday that retired K9 Officer Cecil has passed away.
“It is with deep sadness that the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of retired K9 Cecil, who died peacefully on May 12, 2025, surrounded by his family and former handler Deputy Fitzgerald. K9 Cecil served the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office with distinction for 9.5 years, proving to be an invaluable partner in narcotics detection and officer protection. Known for his discipline, loyalty, and relentless work ethic, Cecil played a vital role in keeping both deputies and the community safe.
“On his very first deployment, Cecil assisted Deputy Fitzgerald and NYS Parole in locating a wanted individual hiding in an attic. During the search, Cecil fell through the attic floor into a second-story bedroom, emerging uninjured and ready for the next mission. It was a moment that exemplified his determination and bravery. Throughout his career, he located numerous suspects, uncovered narcotics, and stood beside deputies during high-risk encounters. His impact on public safety and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office was lasting and profound.
“After retiring in August of 2021, Cecil spent his final years enjoying the life every K9 officer deserves, free from the pressure of work and simply being a house dog with the Fitzgerald family. Whether lounging at home, going on leisurely walks, or just enjoying the peace and comfort of retirement, Cecil embraced his well-earned rest with the same dignity he showed in service.
“K9 Cecil was more than just a working dog, he was a partner, a protector, and a beloved member of our department and the Fitzgerald family. His service was honorable, and his retirement was richly deserved. He will be greatly missed.
“Cecil was 14 years old at the time of his passing.”
