Geneva City Council has delayed filling the vacant Ontario County supervisor seat for wards 3 and 4.
The seat opened when Mayor Steve Valentino appointed Lou Guard as a city court judge. The Finger Lakes Times reports that at last week’s meeting, Republican councilors Bill Pealer Jr. and Pat Grimaldi proposed appointing Republican candidate Jim Babb to the position, but Democrats objected, saying no interviews had been done and the process lacked transparency. Council voted 6-2 to table the motion.
Officials confirmed the council can legally make an appointment before the election in November, but some, including Democratic candidate Jan Regan, suggested waiting and appointing the winner after the vote.
