SHARE NOW

An 84-year-old Ontario County woman was rescued by firefighters after she fell approximately 25 to 30 feet down a well on her property Sunday.

The unidentified homeowner was looking for a lost pet on her Larue Road property in Manchester when she became trapped in the well shortly before 4 o’clock.  According to a report filed by the City of Canandaigua Fire Department, Clifton Springs firefighters arrived on the scene first and updated city units that there was a conscious, injured female trapped in the well, with the edges of the well collapsing in on the victim. She was also standing in three to four feet of water. With the updated information, the Technical Rescue Captain requested Monroe County Special Operations and Rochester Fire Department Technical Rescue Team to respond and assist with shoring the well and other rescue assistance if needed.

Canandaigua Professional Firefighters arrived on the scene and began setting up for a Confined Space Rescue, initiating atmospheric monitoring as well as positive pressure ventilation. With assistance from Fishers Professional Firefighters & Drivers IAFF Local 4907 and Clifton Springs Firefighters, a technical rope rescue system was set up to send a rescuer into the well and retrieve the victim. Operations were initiated, sending a Canandaigua Confined Space Rescue Technician into the well. The victim was rescued and turned over to Finger Lakes Ambulance.

Canandaigua firefighters thanked all agencies for a smooth and efficient rescue, including Clifton Springs Fire Department, Fishers Fire Department, Monroe County Fire Bureau, Rochester Fire Department, Rochester Fire Fighters Local 1071, Ontario County Rope Rescue Team, Finger Lakes Ambulance, Ontario County 911 Dispatchers and Ontario County Emergency Management.

Canandaigua Firefighters are NYS Confined Space Rescue Technicians, with one of the on-scene Canandaigua rescuers today being an International Technical Rescue Association (ITRA) Level 3 Advanced Confined Space Technician. New York State Professional Firefighters Association – NYSPFFA

Clifton Springs, Canandaigua, and Fishers Fire Departments set up their rope rescue equipment before entering the well and rescuing the woman. She had visible minor injuries and was taken to Thompson Hospital by Finger Lakes Ambulance for her treatment.

The Ontario County Rope Rescue Team, Monroe County Fire Bureau Special Operations, and the City of Rochester Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
