On Labor Day, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office welcomed its newest member, K9 Colt. Colt is named in honor of Sheriff Judah Colt, the first Sheriff of Ontario County, having been appointed to the position in 1790.
The sheriff’s office acquired K9 Colt through a grant from the New York State Office of Homeland Security and will become the agency’s second K9 trained in tracking and nitrate detection. Nitrate-detecting K9s are used to reveal the presence of explosive devices and gunpowder.
Colt’s handler is Deputy Jonathan Pennell. Prior to being selected as a K9 handler, Deputy Pennell, a four-year veteran of the Road Patrol, was assigned to the Eastview Mall Patrol for three years.
Deputy Pennell and K9 Colt begin training on September 16th in Monroe County.
