Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencion says additional deputies will be on patrol beginning Tuesday to keep students safe as they return to school. Deputies will follow school buses across the county to ensure motorists stop when red lights are flashing and stop arms are extended. They will also monitor vehicle speeds in school zones.
Sheriff Cirencion reminded drivers that failing to stop for a school bus can result in 5 points on a license and a $250–$400 fine, even for traffic traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway. Speeding in a school zone carries 3 points and a minimum $90 fine for going 1–10 mph over the limit.
“Deputies will take appropriate enforcement action against those violating these laws designed to protect our most vulnerable students,” Cirencion said. He urged motorists to give themselves extra travel time in the mornings to avoid speeding or attempting to pass stopped school buses, ensuring a safe start to the 2025–2026 school year.
