Starting Thursday and lasting through July 6th, Ontario County STOP-DWI will join forces with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Finger Lakes Community College Campus Police, and the Canandaigua and Geneva Police Departments for the STOP-DWI Fourth of July High Visibility Engagement Campaign, aimed at reducing impaired driving during the holiday weekend.
The Fourth of July is a time for celebration — filled with family gatherings, barbecues, and fireworks — but it is also one of the most dangerous holidays on the road due to impaired driving. Tragically, many lives are lost each year in crashes that could have been prevented.
“Multiple arrests were made during the Memorial Day campaign; let’s not repeat it,” said Kate Ott, RN, MPH, Ontario County Public Health Director. “Fair warning; Don’t. Drive. Drunk.”
As part of this statewide initiative, New York State Police, county sheriff’s offices, municipal law enforcement agencies, and local STOP-DWI programs will increase patrols and utilize sobriety checkpoints throughout the weekend to deter and detect impaired drivers.
