Ontario County Man Accused of Abandoning Dog

SHARE NOW

A dog that could heard whining from inside of a room at the Cedar Lodge in Hopewell on New Year’s Night has resulted in the arrest of its owner.

According to an investigation by the Ontario County Sheriff’s office and the Humane Society of Ontario County, the dog, an approximately 2-year-old male American Staffordshire Bulldog, was left inside of Room #6 of the Cedar Lodge on County Road 50 after its owner, John Kirby, Junior, was evicted two days earlier. According to investigators, the dog named Peppy did not have food or water and the floor in this apartment was covered with feces. Peppy was taken to the Humane Society and is being cared for.

Kirby was located on Phoenix Street in Canandaigua and was charged with failure to provide food/water to an impounded animal and was released on an appearance ticket for Hopewell Town Court. Other charges are pending.

The Canandaigua Police Department assisted with the investigation.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
