Ontario County Clerk 54-year-old Matthew Hoose was found dead Tuesday. The news was confirmed in a release from the county:
“It is with sympathy that Ontario County has confirmed that the County Clerk, Matthew Hoose, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. The County will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family. We ask that the privacy of his family be respected.”
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday it responded to an unattended death at a residence in the town of Canandaigua. Deputies confirmed the deceased individual was Hoose. The cause of death remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division and Ontario County Coroner’s Office but does not appear suspicious.
Hoose’s death comes days after the county’s Board of Supervisors issued a vote of no confidence in the clerk for repeatedly falling behind on making payments from the county to the state. Hoose was first elected county clerk in 2012.
This is a developing story and we will continue to update it as more information is made available.
