One Person Killed in Canandaigua House Fire

A house fire in the city of Canandaigua Saturday morning claimed the life of one person. The unidentified victim was removed by firefighters from inside the burning Jefferson Avenue home and pronounced dead at the scene. Two other residents were treated for smoke inhalation at Thompson Hospital. The cause of the fire, which started on the first floor of the home before spreading to its upstairs, remains under investigation.

A house fire on Jefferson Avenue in the city of Canandaigua Saturday morning claimed the life of one person and injured two others.

The City of Canandaigua Fire Department reported that while its Units were en route to the scene at 8:41 a.m. they learned that a person may be trapped inside and heavy smoke could be seen in the area. When Canandaigua Engine 281 arrived on the scene, heavy smoke was spotted coming from the first floor of the two-story home with fire extended to the second floor. Firefighters immediately went to work and started to search for the trapped resident.

Tower 281’s crew located the trapped victim and removed them from the home to an awaiting ambulance. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other residents were treated for smoke inhalation and were transported to UR Thompson Hospital. They are expected to recover.

The fire took two hours to bring under control and the home sustained extensive damage and is uninhabitable. The City of Canandaigua Fire Investigation Team and Police Department is currently investigating the cause.

According to the Canandaigua Fire Department, mutual aid companies were requested to serve as the rapid intervention team and assist with manpower for fire extinguishment and overhaul.

Assisting the Canandaigua City Fire Department on Saturday, the Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Fire Department, Ontario County 911 Center, Ontario County Emergency Management, Canandaigua Emergency Squad, Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department, Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department, Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Department, City of Canandaigua Police Department, City of Canandaigua Public Works, NYSEG and RG&E. The Bristol and Farmington Volunteer Fire Departments provided fill-in coverage before they provided manpower at the scene.

The Canandaigua Fire Department said it will release more information as it becomes public.
