A 45-year-old Brockport man has been charged in connection with a February crash in the Town of Phelps that investigators now say was intentional.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies arrested Dane Cook, of Brockport, on March 4 on a charge of first-degree assault.
Authorities say the charge stems from a Feb. 20 crash at the intersection of State Route 488 and Waddell Road in the Town of Phelps.
Following an investigation, deputies determined that Cook intentionally crashed the vehicle at a high rate of speed with the intent to cause serious physical injury to a passenger.
The crash happened around 4 p.m. on wet roads. Investigators say the vehicle was traveling too fast to safely navigate a bend in the roadway and left the road, driving through two yards, a pool, and a porch, causing extensive damage to nearby properties.
Both Cook and the passenger were injured. One person was flown to a hospital by Mercy Flight, while the other was transported by ambulance. Authorities say both occupants have since been released from the hospital.
Cook was taken to the Ontario County Jail, where he awaited a CAP Court appearance. He is expected to appear in Phelps Town Court at a later date. An order of protection has been requested on behalf of the victim.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by multiple fire and EMS agencies, including crews from Clifton Springs and surrounding communities.
The investigation is ongoing.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
