Judge Rejects Challenge to Ontario Co. DA Candidate’s Petitions

SHARE NOW

An Ontario County State Supreme Court judge has dismissed a challenge to Republican district attorney candidate Jason MacBride’s petition for the June 24 primary.

The challenge, filed by attorney Joseph Burns on behalf of Jim Ritts’ campaign volunteer Kyle Sanders, claimed MacBride lacked the 1,000 valid signatures required to appear on the ballot. MacBride, a former top prosecutor under current DA Ritts, is running against his former boss for the Republican nomination.

The Ontario County Board of Elections initially validated MacBride’s petition, confirming 1,166 valid signatures after disqualifying 270 of the 1,436 submitted. Burns objected to all signatures, filing 493 specific objections as well.

The Finger Lakes Times reports the case was brought before State Supreme Court, where Judge Thomas Leone of Cayuga County ruled on May 2 to uphold the Board of Elections’ decision and allow MacBride to remain on the ballot.
