Final Open House for Ontario Co. Freight Rail Corridor Development Plan Tonight

SHARE NOW

Ontario County leaders will present the draft report findings and solicit any final input from stakeholders for the freight rail corridor in Geneva and Phelps at a public open house tonight.

The open house at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center in Geneva will begin at 6 p.m. and will be informal, allowing attendees to drop in at their convenience during the two-hour session. There will not be a presentation.

The draft report contains findings that address both current conditions and feedback gathered from the community at previous open houses regarding the corridor’s issues and opportunities.

The goals of the Freight Rail Corridor Development Plan include:

• Identifying areas along the rail corridor that are suitable for larger-scale industrial development.
• Exploring options to enhance safety for pedestrians and vehicles in areas around the rail corridor.
• Providing rail-related recommendations for updating municipal comprehensive plans and zoning.
• Evaluating economic and transportation impacts related to the closure of the Norfolk Southern rail line from Geneva to Lyons.
• Assessing the layout, infrastructure, and capacity of the railyard in Geneva and examining how rail alignments could be optimized for efficiency and safety.

Ontario County is coordinating this planning process in partnership with the Towns of Geneva and Phelps, the Village of Phelps, the City of Geneva, the Finger Lakes Railway, the Genesee Transportation Council and the New York State Department of Transportation.
