The owner of four horses that were found in a barn stall standing on 24 to 30 inches of manure was arrested by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office on animal cruelty charges.
A full-size horse was found dead and decomposing in its stall inside of the Crowley Road barn in Farmington owned by 68-year-old Edward Perdue. Investigators said the door to the stall was sealed shut because of the amount of manure on the floor. Another dead horse believed to be a foal, was found partially covered by a tarp in the barn’s exercise area. All of the horses were found to be malnourished and were lacking food and water. The barn’s floor was covered with manure which had plastic wood chips in it that the horses had been chewing on. The horses were not receiving veterinary care and were also in need of farrier service.
The four live horses are being kept at a local livestock location and being cared for. The remains of the two dead horses were exhumed and sent to the Cornell Animal Diagnostic Lab for necropsies.
Perdue was charged with four counts of animal cruelty and four counts of failure to provide food and water to an impounded animal. Additional charges are pending.
