A Canandaigua man has been arrested following an animal neglect investigation in Ontario County. The case began last Saturday when deputies found a 12-year-old Jack Russell-type dog, Louie, wandering near Brickyard Road. The dog attempted to re-enter a nearby home with an open door but was unable to do so.
Deputies found no response from inside the residence and, upon entering, discovered deplorable living conditions, including feces, garbage, and a strong odor. A parked vehicle and reports from a neighbor, who had not seen the homeowner in weeks, raised further concerns. Louie was seized and taken to a shelter, where he was evaluated and placed in a clean kennel. His overgrown toenails, which made walking uncomfortable, were also addressed.
On March 20, deputies arrested Dennis Keyser, identifying him as Louie’s owner and the homeowner at 2322 Brickyard Road. He was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty/neglect due to the dog’s poor living conditions.
Keyser is scheduled to appear in Canandaigua Town Court at a later date.
Louie will remain at the Happy Tails Animal Shelter while the case is adjudicated.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
