A longtime educator and community leader in Yates and Ontario counties has been recognized for decades of service to students and residents.

The Marcus Whitman Central School District announced that Malcolm MacKenzie has received the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award from the Rushville Lions Club.

MacKenzie dedicated 50 years to education, including 46 years at Marcus Whitman, where district officials say he made a lasting impact on generations of students.

Among his most notable accomplishments was helping create the district’s Environmental Classroom Opportunity, or ECO, program. After exploring alternative educational approaches, MacKenzie developed the concept of a hands-on environmental learning program that would connect students with outdoor education and experiential learning opportunities.

The program has continued to influence students for decades, with many former participants returning to share how the experience shaped their lives.

Beyond his work in education, MacKenzie has also served the broader community. He has been a member of the Italy Town Board for 36 years and previously served on the Naples Central School District Board of Education.

District officials praised MacKenzie for his commitment to education, public service, and community leadership, calling the award a fitting recognition of his contributions.

The district also thanked Bill Williams for his work with students through the Youth Rushville Leos Club, noting his efforts have helped encourage community service and leadership among local youth.

School officials said MacKenzie’s legacy continues to be felt throughout the Marcus Whitman community and across the region.
