A Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 24th District is calling for a series of debates ahead of this summer’s primary.
Diana Kastenbaum announced this week that she is proposing five debates before the June 23 Democratic primary, urging fellow candidates to join her in discussing key issues facing the district and outlining their policy positions.
In a statement released by her campaign, manager Hugh Smyth said the proposal reflects a need for more in-depth public discussion during the race.
“Diana recognizes the need for serious debate on the topics that concern our neighbors,” Smyth said. “Voters deserve a thorough understanding of what each candidate is all about.”
Kastenbaum also emphasized the competitiveness of the 24th Congressional District, currently represented by Claudia Tenney.
“We believe Claudia Tenney is beatable, but only if we nominate the strongest possible candidate,” Kastenbaum said. “The best way to do that is through multiple debates that test our ideas, our judgment, and our ability to connect with voters across this district.”
Under the proposal, the debates would be held in multiple locations across the district, including Lockport, Watertown, Canandaigua, Oswego, and Batavia. Kastenbaum suggested a mix of traditional debate formats and town hall-style events.
The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 23.
