Could the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council soon own more property?
The Nature Conservancy has expressed interest in having the council take over two properties it’s poised to acquire – a 100-acre parcel of farmland in Groton, Tompkins County, and 72 acres of dense wetlands in Venice, Cayuga County. Speaking on FLX Morning, Doctor Adam Effler with the council said land acquisition is a great way to further the council’s mission.
“Not only does it allow us to provide stewardship services in protecting the watershed, but also, I believe it adds a certain level of resiliency to the organization,” Effler said. “We’re increasing our value in public service and also [it] sort of stabilizes our organization and our purpose.”
Back in January, the Council picked up its first piece of land from the conservancy, the Fillmore Nature Preserve in the Towns of Sempronius and Summerhill.
