Traffic changes could soon improve safety near one Auburn elementary School
City Council had a first reading Thursday of a resolution that would create a four-way stop and pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Metcalf Drive and Mary Street at Seward Elementary School. Currently, there is only a stop sign on Mary Street.
The proposed changes come as Capital Improvement projects are underway at schools within the district.
At Seward, a new parking lot is being built between the Pop Warner football field and the west side of the school that will feature a loop for parents to drop off their children. This is expected to lessen the number of cars on Metcalf Ave and create a safer traffic pattern.
When the project is complete, something expected to happen before the school year begins, cars will no longer be able to park in front of the school.
Council is expected to receive a presentation on the proposed changes on August 8 by Assistant Civil Engineer Scott McIntyre on how the proposed changes will work with the school’s projects.
Following the presentation, a public hearing will be held on the 15th, and a final vote is anticipated for the 22nd.
