Events are being planned across central and northern Cayuga County to mark the April 8 total solar eclipse passing through the Finger Lakes.
To make it easier to keep track of everything going on, the Cayuga County Office of Tourism has launched a webpage with a calendar of events showcasing the various programs throughout the county. From viewing parties in Fair Haven to educational lectures in Auburn, Tour Cayuga is compiling the events in an easily accessible location.
Karen Kuhl is the office’s executive director. She told Finger Lakes News Radio that the office’s goal is to promote the eclipse as a multi-day event throughout the county to encourage visitors to choose Cayuga County as their eclipse viewing location.
“[We’re] helping and encouraging our partners in the county to make this a weekend-long celebration instead of just the day of the eclipse,” Kuhl said. “There are projections of a lot of people coming to the area; both Buffalo and Rochester are preparing for half a million visitors each.”
Kuhl added that the office is also encouraging tourists and locals alike to be safe during the eclipse as increased visitors will mean more vehicles on the road. She added that visitors should choose one of the many viewing party locations to observe the eclipse.
“There are plenty of safe viewing locations that are being held throughout our county and neighboring counties so get your friends together and really enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime memorable thing happening in our area,” Kuhl continued.
The office will update the calendar as more events are announced.
