Cayuga County is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal with a series of special events and activities, and Tour Cayuga is helping to get the word out.
Tour Cayuga has launched a dedicated Erie Canal section on its website to act as a hub for all the special celebrations planned in the county to celebrate the Erie Canal’s bicentennial. The page features a blog series on the history of the canal in the county, a photo gallery, a downloadable explorer’s guide to sites and experiences along the canal, and an events calendar for Erie Canal-related events throughout the county.
“[The blog series] really is a great primer on the canal, the differences it made on our county, our state, and ultimately our nation… They’re pretty quick reads, they’re precise, and they bring people up to speed on the canal’s significance even into today,” said Noah Howard with the tourism office.
The office is also announcing a photo contest, inviting photographers to share their photos, capturing the canal’s beauty, for a chance to win prizes.
A commemorative poster has also been made to add to the office’s poster series. Designed by David Owen Illustration, the free poster can be picked up at the Equal Rights Heritage Center in downtown Auburn. The office will also mail posters. To have a poster mailed to you, contact the office at 315-255-1658.
Completed in 1825, the Erie Canal connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes via the Hudson River and Lake Erie. The canal passed through Cayuga County in Weedsport, Port Byron, and Montezuma.
