What will be Southern Cayuga’s new mascot?
A public vote next month will let the school district’s students, staff, and community members vote between Falcons and Knights.
The vote will take place on November 20 with students and staff voting in their respective buildings. Community members will be able to cast their ballots from 8:00a-8:00p at the district office. Registered voters will check in as they do for budget votes while non-registered district members will need to bring a valid ID with proof of address.
Those who cannot make the November 20 vote can email [email protected] by November 13 to make special arrangements.
According to the district, due to the time necessary to count the paper ballots, the winning mascot is expected to be announced on November 22.
Once the winning moniker has been selected, a committee will be formed to collaborate with a graphic designer on creating the mascot’s appearance.
Last Fall, community members chose to call themselves the Cougars; however, the Board of Education refused to approve the name due to “a negative connotation associated with it.”
The district had to retire the Chiefs moniker due to a state Education Department ban on using Native American imagery and mascots.
