The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has taken over animal cruelty investigations within the county.
As the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York’s full-time animal cruelty investigator has stepped down, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck told Finger Lakes News Radio that his office is taking the lead with such investigations until the SPCA can fill the position.
“We’re fortunate; for many years, we’ve had cruelty investigators through the SPCA who have taken the majority of those cases… We’re happy to assist and will continue to take these kinds of investigations until they find someone to fill that role.”
The SPCA continues to assist the sheriff’s office by housing and relocating animals taken from abusive homes
Anyone needing to report an incident of animal cruelty is asked to call the Cayuga County 911 Center’s non-emergency line at 315-253-1222 and press 0 when prompted. In an emergency, call 911.
The sheriff’s office and SPCA are also working to create an animal abuse registry that would help ensure individuals convicted of crimes related to animal cruelty don’t have access to additional animals.
