The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded $850,000 to continue its reentry and recidivism reduction initiative.
Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck made the announcement Wednesday at the county’s Judicial & Public Safety Committee meeting that the funding has been awarded by the Federal Bureau of Justice Assistance. The funding will allow the office and its partners to continue to identify and address the needs of incarcerated individuals to keep them from returning to jail once released.
A highly competitive grant, Sheriff Schenck called receiving the award a testament to the hard work of all staff involved.
“It’s a testament not only to our staff in our sheriff’s office but all of our partner agencies, certainly Cayuga Counseling and all of our service providers that have been helping us do this work. We’re one of five jails throughout the country that was awarded this pretty significant grant so I think this a true testament to the great work we’re doing.”
This is the second three-year grant awarded to the sheriff’s office and its partners from the bureau. The original grant was awarded in Fiscal Year 2021.
At last month’s committee meeting, Sheriff Schenck and Heather Petrus MS, LMHC with Cayuga Counseling Services gave a presentation on the initiative, praising the initiative’s success.
As of July, when data was last due to the DOJ, 306 individuals voluntarily enrolled in the program.
