After announcing on Tuesday that he won’t seek a third term as sheriff, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck has been reflecting on his time in the role.
Speaking on FLX Morning, Schenck said while he’s excited for what lies ahead, he’ll miss serving as sheriff for the people of the county.
“After almost 30 years with our sheriff’s office, I’ve determined it’s time for me to take a new path and do some different things, and I’m excited about that, but I’m going to deeply miss being a part of our sheriff’s office and certainly having the role of sheriff,” said Schenck. “It’s just been really an honor, and it’s an incredible job.”
Additionally, while Schenck will no longer be sheriff once his current term expires at the end of 2026, he said he’s not ready to retire just yet.
“I’m young enough where I still hope to be able to work for a little bit, doing some things that I love and giving back to the community.”
He said stepping back from the role of sheriff, a demanding job, will allow him to spend more time with his family and friends.
“I think it’s time to pass the reins on.”
Schenck has spent nearly 30 years with the sheriff’s office. He was first elected sheriff in 2018.
