After serving for 15 years as mayor of Auburn, Michael Quill announced last December he would not seek reelection, meaning Auburn will have a new mayor for the first time since 2008.

Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, Mayor Quill said he’s endorsing his fellow Democrat, City Councilor Jimmy Giannettino, in his bid to become the city’s next mayor.

“I would be very very pleased if Councilor Giannettino would become Mayor Giannettino,” Quill said. “He has all the skills. He’s a much younger man than I am. Things are in the right lane right now and I believe that will continue.”

Quill said that Giannettino’s ability to handle projects and to talk with people from various groups as well as his advocacy for the health of Owasco Lake will help propel the city forward.

“I recognize his skill set, his ability to handle projects,” Quill continued. “He has a way of talking with folks, not only our citizens but our employees. He’s forward-thinking. He has all the skills I believe are necessary to be a successful mayor.”

Giannettino thanked Quill for his support and for his service as mayor.

“Mike Quill has been a great mayor. For 16 years he has led with honor and integrity, and always with the best interest of Auburn in mind. I am appreciative of his leadership and am honored to have earned his endorsement.”

Giannettino faces off against Republican Tim Lattimore in the November election. Lattimore previously served as Auburn’s mayor from 2004-2007.
